'It is fitting that Balliol, the most progressive of our colleges, should have so large a proportion of its buildings modern', wrote Dr Wells in 1897. Up until the early 19th century, Balliol's reputation was flawed, and the college was dismissed as 'a dear, dim drinking college'. Open scholarships and clever tutors helped transform Balliol's image.
