Nostalgic memories of Nottingham's local history

Share your own memories of Nottingham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in 1949 and then spent the next 15 years living there or visiting my grandparents in Broad Oak Street. The house in Broad Oak Street forms a part of my identity. I remember every nook and cranny - the coal cellar full of magnificent blocks of stacked up coal; the pantry behind the curtain which moved in the draught and produced in me the terror of Jimmy Whip who my Grandma assured me was there ...see more
Cannot believe I stumbled across this photo in a calendar that was given free with a local newspaper a few years ago. On close examination I realised that the couple facing the camera on the left hand side are my grandparents, Jean and Trevor Martin! What luck that they were there at the time of the photo. Amazing!
From around 1953 until 1961 I used to stay with my Grandma Hindley who lived just off Bentick Road and then later on in Plimsoll Terrace, Denman Street, Radford, Nottingham. I can vividly recall Plimsoll Terrace - a two up and two down terrace house with communal yard at the back door and outside loo. The stone cobbled streets and the numerous tiny shops on Denman Street were my playground. With ...see more
I was born in Nottingham in 1939 and we lived on Parkdale Road, Bakersfields. Have many happy memories of Parkdale Junior School - Parkdale Cow Sheds! Mrs Stubbins taught the 5-year olds, then Miss Walmsley, Miss Hancock was next, followed by Miss Raistrick and finally Mrs Waffington. For five years from the age of nine I had piano lessons from Horace Burdett. He had a grand piano in his front ...see more
I think it was 1953 and I was 10yrs. I was at the Bentink Road Scool and as I remember, the schools in Nottingham entered a dancing team and we practiced for weeks. Our practice was in the St. Michaels Church hall, opposite our school. I still have the photo and remember several girls names. I was born in Nottingham and grew up in Radford, 30 Hornbuckle Street. My ...see more
I was born in Nottingham in 1947 and left when I was 19 to join the RAF where I stayed for 25 years. I have some happy memories of the place - the Palais on a Saturday and the boat clubs near the Forest ground where they used to have live music in the early and mid '60s. Looking back they were death traps and there would have been very little chance to get out alive had there been a fire. It's a miracle that ...see more
