The Shops In Green Lane In 1960.
A Memory of Northwood.
Starting at Eastbury Road, turn right into Green Lane by the Colliver Fisher car showroom and down the hill past the Blue Bird cafe, Barclays Bank, Martins newsagent, Rawlinsons the stationer, cross the road to the Post Office on the corner, past Ryders and stop for a cuppa at Fullers tea rooms. (Subsequently Timberland.)
Then cross over to Rodes the sweet shop (4 black jacks or fruit salad for 1d and in later years for a packet of ten Olivier or Nelson from the cigarette vending machine outside.) by the car park and back up the hill taking in the record shop (Singles 6 shillings and 8 pence each. 3 for £1), Express Dairies for a Ski yogurt, Worboys the butcher and Cullens the grocer.
Turn right by the war memorial and head to the Reindeer (Public bar on the left, saloon bar on the right) for a refreshing pint of Ind Coope mild for 1 shilling and 10 pence.
George Blythe might remember the other residents of Frithwood Avenue, Robert and Nigel Tiffin, "The Terrible Twins", who, like George and me, attended Northwood Preparatory School ("Terry's)
