By this date the town was on the tourist map, being one of the recommended excursions for visitors staying in Chester. One guide book states that 'an interesting visit may be paid to the Marston Mine, 300ft deep, with a roof supported by huge pillars of salt... frequent subsidence of the earth, owing to the pumping out of brine, gives a singular appearance to many parts of the town'.
