A Memory of Northolt.

I was a 5 year old when we moved into the new housing estate in Northolt, we lived at 31 Rushdene Crescent. Then always it seamed that we had long hot summer holidays, playing in the woods, or in the sand pit (ex army firing range) or over to the sunken barge. Around us lived an great assortment of people, the Bridgmans, the Cooks, (Brenda was the first girl I kissed), Eileen Thatcher, John Gavin, David Lambert, Eric & Raymond Collins, and so many more,. All the kids were young and most were in families of 3 or 4, a few only had one or two kids. My father was about the first person on that estate to by a TV, we had about 2 hours of TV a day and a very small 9" screen, but many of the kids used to come to watch TV at our house as it was very new to them. We saw the corronation of the Queen on TV ,not so many poeple can say that.
But in general it was a great place to live, we would go off to play and get back whenever. Never heard of any kids getting molested or attacked, mind you we were always in a gang or 3 to 5 kids.
Anyway, anybody from Northolt please get in touch, it would be nice to relive and get to share some memories.

I lived at 96 Rushdene Cres from birth(ish) in 1949 til 'flying the nest' in 1968; my mum continued there til about 10 years ago. Older sister Susan and younger brothers Roger and Peter; surrounded by similar young families- Haywards, Boyces, Doyles, ... Big divide on the estate was 'the alleyway'- this side going to Arundel School (remember Mr Rooke by name- Head Mr Chapell travelled daily from Orpington!). Loved trips to the sand pits, clay pigeons, cartridge cases; and newt ponds- also threshing machine with belts driven from Massey-Ferguson tractor, stooks in the fields ... My brothers liked the sunken barge- I never got into fishing (didn't catch anything- no roach, nothing ... My sister caught a husband, Norman Pearce lived in Kingshill Ave.
Found myself trying to remember all the cinemas then- Granada in Greenford became Tesco (and another toward Ealing before Costons Lane?); the Forum and Walpole in Ealing (97 bus); several in Hayes (140/55)- Savoy (Waitrose?) Essoldo, Ambassador (in Hayes Town- became Swimming Baths); also flix in Harrow-Granada; South Harrow Odeon, Ruislip- Embassy?? So many ... It was a wonderful life ..
I worked as a Saturday boy at Mac Fisheries in Greenford; Steak and kidney pie and two veg at the Broadway Cafe 2/8d
Happy to be corrected,
Brian
Have just read your comment above. I don't remember any of the names you mention other than David Hayward, who went to Arundel school. I went to the other school, Downe Manor, and I lived in Kingshill Avenue, 4 doors down from the Pearce family. Mum, dad, Norman, who was in the army and his younger brother Keith, and of course Lassie, their dog who I used to walk before school. Must have been 1960-64 ish.

I also lived in Hartfield Avenue - late 50s and early 60s - I recognise most of the names above but sadly not the faces, although the places are familiar. Our next-door neighbours were the Kinsellas and I'm surprised they haven't received a mention - until now
My name is Colin Davey and about 1950 we moved into a flat over the butchers in Shadwell Drive and I attended Gifford School from its opening day until I moved on to Drayton Manor School after passing the 11plus and remember the happy and safe times playing in Gifford Woods along the old canal and of course on the old army firing range. Happy days.
I lived at 9 Down Close from 1951 to 1962 my back garden backed onto the alley that run the lengh of the estate. I remember the Dorset family at No 5, Kenny, Pat & Nicky (who I am still in contact with) Fisher family No 6, Robert & Susan, Brown family No 10 only remember Frankie. A family called O'Leary lived in Down Way opposite Downe Manor Junior school who had 2 daughters called Eileen & Maureen (my age) also a son not sure of his name, their mother looked after me. I also went to Downe Manor infant & junior school. Very happy days.
I lived in Bournemead Avenue 1949-1976 and I was telling a friend tonight about the fun of living so close to fields, woods and a sandpit. Trying to google to explain what the sandpit was I came across this forum. Interesting to read the sandpit was an old army firing range.

Hi my name is Graham Burke I lived at 38 Townson Ave.I also remember Sid Pettifer etc. Also Gordon Lawton,Bob Milton And Bob Daly from Bournemead Ave.Then there w ere Chris Hughes,Pete Grealish,Alan Picket and Alan Piper from Bournemead Way.Is it my memory or was it Dave Thomas back then?Happy days over the fields back then in the sand pit and woods.
I lived at Rayners Gardens, from 1951, as an 8 month old baby. I remember the Merretts, the Lydons, Hogbens, ( who's daughter chopped my hair off when I was 5, the Bonners,
Special friend, when I was 8, called Christine Greenland, who moved away from our street.
I left when I was just 16 years old, when I got married!. I went to Arundal Primary School, and then onto Walford Secondary Modern School. I would not have been able to name Mr Chappel, or Mr Rooke, but ithe post reminded me of them, and I remenber them well.
I don't think anyone who has posted would know me. Then I was called Pamela Kruck. Down our street, of about 10 houses, every house had two or three children, only one person had a car, it was black, and we would have great fun looking at the wierd shapes of our bodies, in the shiny black paintwork. The owner did not like this, at number 5, the Phillips, thinking we were up to damaging his car, but we wern't.
Lots of fun playing hide and seek, rounders, hopscotch, drawing on the pavements in chalk. The road was more or less a dead end then, so we could play in the street, with virtually no cars to interrupt play.
Also, exploring the fields, woods, and firing range.
We roamed all day in the summer holidays, free as birds, climbing trees, playing at the park down Kingshill Avenue, or the Lime Tree estate, getting up to mischief in the phone boxes, were you used to be able to ' tap ' the number and get through.
When attending Walford secondary modern school, there were several ways to get there, one was going through, with trepidation, the alleyway that run through part of our estate.
Often, there were not very nice children, and loose dogs, which were two gigantic Great Danes.
I love dogs, but they were terrifying.
My good friends at that school, were Jackie Baldwin, Freda Beauchamp, and Sue Bailey.
There was a gang of us, Jackie Baldwin left the school.
Sue Murphy, Marie Train, Jackie Lawrence, Barbara Merrett, Sheila Trim, Elaine Sexton, Diana Mead, Susan Bailey, Freda Beauchamp.
I remember going to dances with them, where they had live bands, as the norm.
No discos in those days!.
Walked to school everyday, only once got a lift home, with my next door neighbour Colin Merrett.
My two bothers went to Elliot's Green Grammer School.
John Kruck, born in 1948, and Fred Kruck, born in 1946.
I lived in Thorndike ave, Thortholt between 1954 until 1959 and went to Walford secondary school, for that time. I remember the fields opposite we all played in as children. And playing hopscotch and hulahoop and stilts in the street.
Does anyone else remember this?

Hello Pamela, enjoyed reading your post. I am about 7 years younger than you. Thanks for bringing back memories of the woods the sand pits , the clays left over from the clay pigeon shooting the sunken barge with wild flowers growing in it. Amongst your list of names I saw Diana mead, I remember the 2 sisters Yvonne was the other girl. They lived on the 1st floor above us at the grange court flats in Northolt. Will write more, but have to go. Alison offin (was) sprules
Pamela nee Kruck- I was in the same year as one of your 'bothers' (!) John at both Arundel and Eliots Green. He went on after Eliots Green to Nottingham University to study Architecture; I went from there to Sheffield Uni. Any update? Have you seen there are plans to demolish part of Arundel to build a six-storey block of flats?

Hi All. I lived in Northolt from 1964-1974 (From birth to 10 years old), attended Arundel School. My family moved to Ickenham in 1974 and I gradually lost touch with my old schoolfriends. Was anyone on here at Arundel around that time? A few names I recall are Gary Whiting, Ian Smith, Ann Harriman, Polly Pratt. I lived in Gurney Road.
