Sainsburys

A Memory of North Cheam.

I remember the small grocers in North Cheam with the terrazzo floor called Sainsburys. We used to go in and get the ham sliced with a machine, cheese sliced with the wire and leave my sister outside in the pram! I remember the tiled floor! I also remember Tesco, where my mother bought some mouldy cheese... we never shopped there again. I lived in Wordsworth Drive as a kid, we moved to Cornwall Road when I was 11. I went to St Dunstans and used to get on the bus on my own at 6 years old outside Fletchers the newsagents, opposite Wickham Avenue. I remember a cigarette machine outside the shop and a hairdressers next door, is it still there? I passed my 11+ and went to Sutton High. After time away, I moved to Whittaker Road and Northfield Crescent as an adult and my kids went to Park Farm Infants and Juniors. My elder daughter did a year and a bit at Cheam High, then we moved to Hampshire. I remember Bissex, the Male outfitters, where my dad used to buy his vests, pants and shirts, Dwight Obee, the estate agent, Woolworths, FHW, the florist in the new block in front of the rebuilt Queen Vic, the post office, called Lavender Corner, where my mum used to get her child allowance (a sort of cheque book that they stamped), the public toilets, which I think were originally some sort of nuclear bunker. I also remember p&m on London Road which became some sort of bar and the TV shop next to Dwight Obee.
