Normanton, The Grammar School c.1955

More about this scene
The small section with the bell tower is the only remaining part of the old Freeston High School; it was built in 1592 with an endowment from John Freeston, who lived at Altofts Hall. In 1867 the Church School was built opposite, and the Grammar School began to struggle - fee-paying students were sent to the cheaper option. The Grammar School was then rebuilt on its three-acre site and opened on 25 October 1897 by the Earl of Crewe. Most of the structure in the picture has gone, but the present Normanton Junior School is still looked over by the old bell tower.
