More about this scene
Newark enjoyed great prosperity in the 18th century through industrial growth and through its status as a coaching town on the Great North Road. There was much rebuilding then, so the town has a predominantly Georgian character; there was further rebuilding after the railway, the east coast main line, arrived in the 1840s. The town plan is still that of the medieval town, but there has been 20th- century rebuilding. Much of the middle distance was rebuilt in the 1970s, and the little pantile- roofed medieval building (right) went in the 1960s.
