More about this scene
In this view from the top of St Mary's tower, the castle ruins can be seen in the centre background. Following Newark's surrender, the Parliamentarians smashed the bowl of the 15th-century font in St Mary's; it was eventually replaced around 1660. This act of restoration has resulted in the 15th-century saints having mid 17th-century heads.
