I Was Brought Up In New Malden, Surrey

A Memory of New Malden.

I was delighted to find this site which brought back many memories for me. I was born in 1942 and lived in Landseer Road until I left to get married in 1961. I then moved to Motspur Park and in 1969 moved to Maidenhead, Berkshire. I attended Malden Manor Primary School and then went on to New Malden East (Burlington Girls' School) in Burlington Road. I was very happy there and when I left I worked for Imperial Chemical Industries, Millbank, for 10 years until I had my daughter in 1967. I was married in the Congregational Church at the Fountain and my daughter was also christened there.

I remember clearly Malden High Street. I just loved going into Cannings Bookshop and my mother always shopped in Tudor Williams. As a small child the way of payment there fascinated me. Money was popped into a little pod and then sent on a line round to the Cashier. The receipt was then sent back via the same way. I can still picture this.

My husband and I used to treat ourselves to lunch at a small cafe in the High Street. I think it cost about 10 shillings!

I passed my driving test in 1968 going through the back roads of New Malden.

My father, (Bert Meek), was a founding member of the Parkfield Cricket Club which also had a Social and Drama side. I even performed in one or two plays which were held in Malden. My father was the producer. We also had our annual dinner at The Royal Oak. Hopefully somebody will remember us. Cynthia Diossy (Meek)

I remember the Tudor Williams cash machine Cynthia. It fascinated me as a child and Cannings was my favourite shop too. I lived in Beverley Road in the Fifties and Sixties until I married in ‘75

Does anyone remember the sweet shop on the corner of Alric Avenue. I used to buy bubble gums, black jacks, jamboree bags etc. They would weigh up sweets on old fashioned scales from big glass jars. We used to call it The Corner Shop. There were two other sweet shops near this one; there was The Caprice on the other side of the road and Arthur's a few doors along, not to mention Pick 'n Mix from Woolworths!
