St Nicholas (Later Box Hill) School & Remembering The Misses Garrard
A Memory of Mickleham.
I attended St Nicholas school (later Box Hill School) between approx 1957 and 1962. The school was co-educational and catered to children aged from about age 4 to 18. My brother was 4 and I was 7 when we started at the school. My father was at Edinburgh University medical school specialising in thoracic medicine and my mother studying medicine in london so we were sent off to boarding school. I remember it all fondly. One or two negatives but mostly great. Does anyone remember the sports days and the plays? Midsummer Night's Dream was performed on the lawn one lovely sunny June. The Saturday walks when we had to find our way back to the school aided by a compass and a map in time for tea?
I remember an older girl Anthea - perhaps 16 to my 10 - who was kind and helpful, Rowen a handsome 14 year old boy - Ms Miller (?) the music teacher - literature / English. I remember reading many books which became required reading only when I was at university. Excellent grounding.
