More about this scene
Traditionally, retail outlets built on the approaches to railway stations serving local lines have proved to be most profitable. This line-up of chemist, post office, small supermarket, ladies' wear and greengrocer/ fishmonger will have collected customers both leaving and entering the station. I imagine that the front of the newsagent/ tobacconist is hidden behind one of the ornamental trees.
