This view from the west shows John Smedley's massive Hydro on the opposite side of the valley, which brought spa town prosperity to the town after its erection in 1853. It stands at the top of the steep climb of Bank Road, in the centre of the picture. The Hydro buildings are now the offices of Derbyshire County Council.

Between 1961 and 1964 I attended the The Matlock Teachers Training College at Rockside and was resident at Rockwood for 3 years. It was a wonderful time for me with my highlight being the co-organising of the double decker bus trip to Moscow in 1964 when we took 42 students on a travel experience behind the iron curtain to discover first hand how communism really 'worked'. I, like many others, spent my student days at Matlock College of Education. The two main campuses and halls of residence were Rockside Hall and Chatsworth Hall, two magnificent buildings. From my bedroom I could see Riber Castle up on the hill. Apart from the well frequented Duke of Wellington hotel, I remember our annual raft races down the Derwent. Matlock is a very pretty place, I remember stopping off at Matlock on our way to Nottingham when I was 8 years old. I remember so well how pretty the place was, the dales, hill sides the scenery, just beautiful.
My Great Grandfather Geo. B. Barton established a hydrotherapy business in Matlock Bank in the late 1800s. I believe the first was Jackson House, then he built Dalefield House(later Lilybank) His daughter, my Grandmother, emigrated to New Zealand. I am interedsted in any photos of the above, information etc. I believe he is buried in a local cemetery. If anyone has any information please contact me at barber@world-net.co.nz Thank you
