As can be seen in this picture, Lymm was well provided with shops. However, many of the county's hamlets and smaller villages were heavily dependent upon visits from retailers operating mobile shops. There were travelling butchers, bakers, ironmongers, grocery stores and so on. There were also individuals who toured around selling anything from watercress and prawns to pieces of cloth.
