More about this scene

Sir Robert Lumley was granted licences to crenellate in 1389 and 1392, making Lumley, along with Raby, County Durham's two late 14th-century castles. Each of the four square corner towers is topped off with octagonal machicolated turrets, from which unpleasant things could be dropped upon the heads of unwelcome visitors. The turreted and machicolated gatehouse on the east side can be seen through the trees.

Working In Lumley Castle
Help, My Grandfather and Grandmother, Arthur and Margaret Hancock worked in Lumley Castle, as a coach driver and seamstress. We think this was sometime between 1895 and 1910. We need help to confirm this, as we are at a dead end. If anyone with information regarding my Grandparents, it would be most welcome.. Many Thanks Mr Alan Thomson.

Ferry Man
This is not actually a memory, but after finding this photograph I just had to write and say that in the little ferry going across the River Wear is either my great grandad or great granduncle, if that is the right terminology.  I am an ancestor of James Curry who along with his brother were the ferry men on that ferry.  When the bridge was built James became the bridge keeper.  One of James's sons Reginald drowned ...see more

Lumley
I was born in Lumley, so was my mum, so I was very happy growing up there. My grandad worked at the pit, his name was Thomas Moore and he lived at 26 Lumbley Terrace, my grandmother was Bettrix Basey [Moore] and my mum Marjorie Vera Ward. If anyone in the village knew them, it would be lovely to hear from you.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
