In 1872 the surgeon Joseph Lister wrote enthusiastically of Looe's health-giving properties, favourably comparing its climate to that of Switzerland. A steam engine is about to enter the station to link up with a line of carriages that will bring another train load of holidaymakers to this balmy coast.
