More about this scene
This is the old St Oswald's Catholic church, which was replaced by a new one in 1965. Father O'Sullivan is the present incumbent. The parish dates from 1895, when Longton was a small village straggling along the Liverpool Road. Now very popular because of its proximity to Preston, Longton has burgeoned into a dormitory town with its own medical centre and library. The old Catholic church became a social center; in the early days, it was both church and school.
