More about this scene
This building, erected for Henry VIII, is seen here at the close of Queen Victoria's reign. The gatehouse opens on to the end of Pall Mall, with a view up St James's Street to Piccadilly. In the picture the wooden Tudor gates are open for public access, unlike today when guardsmen stand outside a closed gate - increased security is deemed necessary now.
