Liverpool, The Overhead Railway 1895

More about this scene
Here we have a close-up view of the Overhead Railway, which ran from north to south in the city and yet did not hold up traffic going down to the Pier Head. It was the first elevated electric railway in Europe, and the first railway in Britain to have automatic signalling, and there were many other 'firsts' for this private venture. It was initially opposed by the city council, and by the Docks & Harbour Board, both of whom it served well for almost a century. You can see the large ornate wooden Pier Head Station on right of the photograph. The very distinctive square Tower Building was once the town house of the Stanley family and Lord Derby.
