The stall holders and the ice cream man must be wondering where the customers are. They must either all be at work, or down at Rudyard Lake for the day. By the mid-1950s, Leek had become a major centre for the knitwear industry: three-quarters of all the scarves worn in the UK were said to have been manufactured in the town.

Leek In The 1930s And 40s
I arrived in Leek, or more precisely Leek Brook, aged 4 in 1931. Later went to Miss Rainer's school. Father was sales manager at Joshua Wardle (later director). Many happy memories of Leek and its surroundings until I left for the army in 1945, never to live there again. Nevertheless have visited many times, largely because of the railway at Leekbrook which was very close to our house. Memories include the ...see more

Evacuation
At the beginning of the war I was evacuated to Leek. I was only there until the Christmas but I remember going to school in a building called the Nicholson Institute and I stayed with some lovely people called Wagstaffe near Balls End Park. They had a shop where they sold and repaired watches. I remember that we used to go for walks on Sunday afternoons to Rudyard Lake. Audrey Frost

St Lukes And Milner Girls
I was born in Leek and went to St lukes school and then onto Milner girls in Springfield road. Did anyone else out there go to either of these schools.

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
