In 1893, a study by a German sociologist found that six out of every seven working-class families in the mill towns of Lancashire and Yorkshire managed to save enough money to spend on a holiday. The money included wages earned by children. In 1841 Thomas Cook organised the earliest-known Sunday excursion with a trip from Leeds to Hull. The train comprised 40 carriages and carried 1,250 passengers.
