More about this scene
This 33-acre lake was constructed from an old quarry. The depth at its deepest point is 100 feet. The delightful steam boat is the 'Maid of Athens'. A trip round Waterloo lake was 2d for adults and 1d for children. The steam boat was launched in 1895, but she was replaced four years later when the new steam yacht 'Mary Gordon' was launched. The boathouse at the other end of the lake was constructed in 1902, and held 150 rowing boats. In the 1930s an amnesty on war weapons produced 300 firearms, which were sunk in the lake during the darkest nights. A few years ago the lake was drained for maintenance, and the police patrolled the area to stop weapons being retrieved.
