More about this scene
One of the highlights of shopping along Briggate was the glass-roofed arcades, such as the Queen's and the County. In earlier days Briggate was where the merchants and clothiers assembled to buy and sell cloth, the start of business being heralded by the sounding of the market bell. The street had many small inns for the market customers, built on plots in yards behind the street.
