More about this scene
On 17 September 1944 Sunday morning worshippers on their way to church heard the distant rumble of aircraft engines. At RAF Cottesmore, a few miles away, the biggest armada of aircraft ever seen in Rutland prepared to move off for Arnhem, where paratroops were to seize a crossing over the Rhine. They failed with a great loss of life.
