Knottingley, Ferrybridge Power Station c.1965

More about this scene
The new A1 bisected the town of Ferrybridge after 1967. The canal was still busy, with a barge taking coal loaded into a series of 'Tom Puddings' - short containers that can be coupled together in any length. They were patented in 1826 and first used on this waterway from 1865. A walk along the path in between the canal and river offers a splendid history lesson on the industrial origins of Ferrybridge and Knottingley.
