More about this scene
Late Victorian guidebooks often described the central part of the island in terms such as 'mountainous and beautifully diversified; streams, flowing through narrow leafy glens, with precipitous sides, form numberless cascades. The hilly region ends with the valley of the Sulby, to the north of which is a plain'.
