More about this scene
Behind the tree on the left of the photograph can be seen the old Middleton Hotel, completed in 1876. It became an officer's training school during the Second World War and then from 1947 was again in use as the Ilkley Moor Hotel. A fire in July 1968 destroyed the main building, but the building on the far left survived and remains popular as the Ilkley Moor Vaults - or the 'Taps'. Along the opposite bank, next to the present day garden centre, is the start of the 73 mile-long Dales Way to Bowness in the Lake District.
