Originally the open central area in Horsham was known as the market place, but by the later 19th century the northern part was called the Carfax, a name possibly derived from 'Skarfolkes', used in 1524 for taxation purposes, or from the street called 'Skarfax' mentioned in 1548. The war memorial was erected in 1921, but it has since been re-sited.
