More about this scene
Daniel Defoe described Hereford in 1724 as 'an old, mean-built and very dirty city'. A century earlier, during the Civil War, one Roundhead sergeant said of the local people, 'The inhabitants are totally ignorant in the ways of God, and much addicted to drunkeness and other vice, but principally in swearing, so that the children that have scarcely learned to speak, do universally swear stoutly'.
