I too was a victim of the York Road bombing. I lived at No 1 York Road and also ended up with my parents in requisitioned accommodation. I have been searching for photographs of York Road so far no luck. I cama across this web site after all this time and seem to remember the name Norman Long. The Hepburns also lived there. Any contact would be greatfully received.
My Saturday and school holiday job was working for the greengrocers, can't remember their name, next to ABC bread shop. Really nice people and gave me a life long understanding of quality fruit & veg. My bike was a new greengrocers gas pipe special with a flat frame on the front for orange boxes full of fruit & veg. I was a victim of the Hendon bombing in 1941 aged 5. We used to live York Road with a lot of our uncles and aunts with the name of Long. We were made homeless through the bombing and put into the church hall on the Edgware Road as temporary accommodation, until other housing was found for us. We finished up at 37 Park Road. My sister and I went to Algernon Road School and then to Brent Secondary Modern. If anybody had the same experience, I would like to hear from them.
I worked as a delivery boy at Martins stores between 1965 and 1967. I had a large delivery bike with a basket on the front and delivered all around the Hendon area, often getting soaked through in the winter. The store moved to Vivian Ave in the 1970s. I can recall the Watford Way when it was not a dual carriage-way and you risked life and limb trundling the bike across 6 lanes of traffic.
