More about this scene
This was once the site of Helston Castle, built in the 13th century by Edmund, Earl of Cornwall. Despite its apparent weaknesses - it was built on low-lying ground surrounded by hills - it commanded the head of the estuary. With the cutting-off of the Cober the castle lost its raison d'etre, and it was in ruins by the late 15th century.
