Heath Town
A Memory of Heath Town.
I was born in Heath Town in 1950 in Tremont Street that was just off the Wednesfield Road. There was The Poplar public house on the right going towards Wednesfield, the next road was where I was born. At the top of the street was a factory called Charles Snape. I went to Causeway Lake Infants School at the top of Inkerman Street and then when I was seven went to Woden Road Junior School. I remember going to St.Barnabas church Sunday School, which was the little church next to Chubbs factory. I always remember Masters the bike and toy shop at the top of the village where I would buy a matchbox car for six old pence. Marriots was the butchers just round the corner from us on the main road, there would be sawdust on the floor in the shop. Bridgewoods was the grocery shop just down from The Poplar pub, it had a cellar with the grating just under the shop window and when you stood on it to look in the window their dog would jump up to the grating and make you jump. Across the road from The Poplar pub was a scrap yard where I had my first three wheeler bike from. I remember going with my older sister and brother to the youth club at the top of the village, it was called The Blue Triangle where they played records on a record player and served pop and crips. The swimming baths at the top of the town was a real treat, we didn't have a bathroom, just a tin bath in front of the fire, so for a treat we would be given six old pence and we could have a clean towel and a piece of soap at the swimming baths and an attendant would show you into a lock up cubical where there was a bath with lovely hot water. I have happy memories of Heath Town, unfortunately all the old houses were knocked down and modern flats were built and all the old community moved to various other places. Does anyone else have memories of old Heath Town?
