More about this scene
George Hilton Arriving from Hastings in 1882, George Hilton established himself as a cabinet maker in the Crossways area (today's Sussex Road). His timing proved providential, as his skills were in demand by the families who were moving into the then new houses being built throughout the town. Within five years his business had outgrown his premises; this prompted his move into South Road, where he described the business as 'a cabinet maker and furniture warehouse'. The larger premises were soon put to good use, and he was able to display a wide range of furniture that he had not only made, but had also bought in, thereby widening the choice for his increasing number of customers.
