More about this scene
Said to be the highest town in Surrey, Haslemere is 500ft up in the hills close to the borders of both Sussex and Hampshire. It was a remote spot of ironworks and farms until the coming of the railway and the arrival of the Victorian intelligentsia - including George Eliot.
An extract from Surrey.
