The earlier pub on the site, made famous by the music hall star Florrie Ford, was demolished in the early 1920s, and rebuilt to a vaguely similar design. The bay windows of the old pub are echoed by sashed windows above, but the new brick-faced building is inescapably of its period. Internally, some old features have been retained, and there are good inter-war fittings as well. Note the retention of the sphinx-like figures on the copings at either end of the central bay.
