More about this scene
This was the entertainment centre of the town. Around Ward's End were many cinemas and theatres. The Electric Theatre opened as early as 1910, the Coliseum (now a dance hall) some ten years later. The Victoria Hall was an early concert hall, which is now used as the civic theatre. The Regal Cinema on the right was the town's supercinema; it opened in 1938 and seated 1,918; in 1976 this capacity was tripled. Behind this cinema is the magnificent Theatre Royal of 1905. Bingo was played here in its latter years, but it now lies vacant, forlorn and awaiting a new use.
