More about this scene
Just to the left of Tendring Garden is the war memorial, erected at the edge of Parsonage Field and unveiled in November 1920. Beyond is the British Legion Comrades Club, which opened soon after in the mid 1920s. It was replaced by the Hailsham Club nearer the church in order to make way for the Vicarage Fields shopping precinct, which was started in 1965 and opened in 1968. The war memorial is now in a low walled area as part of the precinct's hard landscaping.

War Memorials
A special selection of photographs from our Archive of the War Memorials that connect us with those who fought and perished in the conflicts that have shaped the world we live in today. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."- Laurence Binyon, For The Fallen
