More about this scene

This view captures well the design ethos of the period. This roof garden was placed on top of Harvey's, a five-storey department store of 1957 designed by Jellicoe and Partners and built behind a retained High Street frontage. The garden survives, with its views over surrounding townscape and countryside. Harvey's is now House of Fraser with a large modern addition fronting North Street, and the restaurant is now French and classier, but at least this archetypal 1950s-designed roof garden is intact.

Happy Childhood Times
In the late fifties and early sixties myself and my family lived just outside Guildford (where I was born in 1951) and my mother used to take me after school on shopping trips to Guildford High Street and into Harveys as it was then, as she knew the fashion buyer there. Saturday Job At Harveys
I had a Saturday job at Harveys and I was paid £1 for the day. It would have been about 1964-65. I remember working in the toy department one Christmas and loving it; so much easier than the paper round on the Sunday. Harvey's had creaking floorboards under heavy carpets and still had Pneumatic Tube Transport for sending money and receiving change in a cylindrical tube.

Harvey's Roof Garden
We moved to live in Hersham, Surrey, in the late 1950's and visited Guildford quite often through the 1960's. A visit to the Rooftop Cafe was always a highlight for me. I remember jumping from stepping stone to stepping stone, and watching the fish darting about in the water. I have never seen another roof top cafe anywhere and I'm very glad to know this unique place is still in existence - I have very happy memories of it.

Happy Days
My then boyfriend worked on Saturdays selling ice creams, I used to go up there to see him and sit in the sun looking at the stunning views.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
