There was a time in the 19th century when the powers that be in Hull looked upon the needs of the fishing industry as little more than a nuisance and a hindrance to commercial traffic. Not so Grimsby, where facilities were improved, and Hull trawler owners were offered inducements to cross the river. By 1891 the Grimsby fleet numbered 800 sail and 35 steam vessels; yet by the beginning of the 20th century it had changed to 500 steam and 34 large sailing trawlers.

A Tragic Accident
Sometime around the late 1950s my uncle was at the docks and was killed when a tractor was being loaded onto a ship. A cable broke and the tractor fell and killed him. Does anyone have any memories of this?

Public Health In Grimsby.
I was a Public Health Inspector in Grimsby from 1950 to 1954 when I moved to Suffolk. I remember going to the old and new slaughterhouses to do meat inspection, working all hours and getting nothing for it ! We had to take 'overtime' as time off when it suited the boss, Harold Parkinson, NOT when it suited us ! Times In Sidney Park
1950's: As a young lad I lived just a few minutes from this park (which is in Cleethorpes not Grimsby) and so spent a lot of time there. This pond was home to many hundreds of small fish, which I assume to be sticklebacks and minnows. We couldn't afford nets or rods so we fished using a jam jar attached to a length of string. Old Market Place, Grimsby.
Anyone remember the name of the café in the market place? used to go there upstairs, juke box days! also would frequent the pub opposite St.James church, name evades me now, many moons ago.[white heart?]

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
