More about this scene
This well-worn structure of decorative flint work was part of the old medieval town walls, built as a fortification at the end of the 13th century. It was raised in height in the time of the threat of the Spanish Armada. Until the 19th century, building was kept within the old walls. After this date there was an inevitable spreading of streets and tramways.
