Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Wednesday 18th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Wednesday 18th December will be delivered in the New Year.

Mrs. Booth's Shop

A Memory of Goldthorpe.

Does anyone have a photograph of the part of the main road where Mrs.Booth's shop was situated? Or perhaps the garage belonging to Mr. Booth? I think the shop was either between the Police Station and Sharp's fish and chip shop or on the row beyond the school, going towards where Sugdens was near the Zebra crossing. The garage was below the railway line going towards Highgate. A friend asked me if I knew of them, because she has an idea the Booths were part of her family history. I remembered the shop quite well but not the garage, though I must have walked past regularly on the way to my Nanna's house in Probert Avenue. If you can loan or reproduce photos, she would be very pleased. Thank you,

Are you familiar with Goldthorpe? I have revised my original write-up as I had second thoughts on the shop location.

Booths shop was no 27/29 Barnsley rd gold Thorpe next door to mine .

I wondered if it would be, with your name, but just couldn't remember if Booths was next door or further along the shop fronts. I had many a 'fish and four penn'orth' from Sharp's, and with my mother, used to ring an aunt from the telephone box round the corner. We lived on Gosling Gate Rd. Mum was nurse with Dr. Kaye etc. but I remember Dr. Mills' old surgery further up Doncaster Rd.

I was born in the flat above the shop in Jan 1962, my Grandmother was Mrs Muriel Booth. I'm not sure if my mother or her brother (who with his wife Janet took over the shop) have any photos'. I'm pretty sure it was a double fronted unit (although maybe not when I was born) and next door to Sharp's Chippy. There might be photo's of Granddad's garage somewhere, which btw had the first electric petrol pumps in South Yorkshire.

Dr Kaye delivered me, and gave me 'gas' at the dentists (Rothney?), I still hear the whine of the pulley cords that drove the drills! In my memory the whole place was much bigger, the Library seemed way up the road, I spent hours there later during school holidays while Mum worked in the shop. The 'scraps' and mushy peas at Sharp's have never been equalled.

Thank you for your response. A distant relative asked me about it as I lived in Goldthorpe 1952-1967 (Gosling Gate Rd.) and she thinks she has a connection to the Booths. I will pass this on.

I lived in Goldthorpe at the time you mention, (Welfare View and later Whitworth St) and, although I am now in my eighties, still remember the old place with fondness. That particular stretch of Doncaster Rd. you mention, from the police station towards Highgate is still fresh in my mind, except for the shop names. One in particular was the fish and chip shop. I remember it as Walkers. Anyway, I have lived in Canada since 1981 but still think of Goldthorpe as my old home. Maybe we can chat some more of it later if anyone else is interested. Bye for now!

Hi. Thank you for the nice comments about scraps & mushy peas lol . My gran (polly sharp .moved into the chippy in 1951 . I Took it over . Next door to us was mrs coopers then mrs booths .

This was my Grandmothers shop and grandfathers garage. My parents took over the shop in the late 70’s buying it from Grandma Booth. The previous comments are from my cousin. I am sure mum (Janet Booth) will have pictures. She ran the shop with my dad (Michael Booth) until they retired around 2007 and sold up. Joan - I hope your well, you snd your dad, did do the best fish and chips and I miss your mums fish cakes to this day!
