Farncombe And Godalming Memories.
A Memory of Godalming.
My grandad had a grocers shop in Farncombe high street, Renmants. My mum, brother and I lived with the grandparents and great grandma during the 2nd world war. I can remember a German plane being shot down in Broadwater playing fields and we all went to have a look. Also,a bomb dropped on a house near Godalming Grammar School, so we went to see the huge crater as my grandad was in the ARP.
I went to Farncombe C of E infants where my friends were Fred Elliot, Arthur Debenham, Billy (can't remember), Anne Summers, Jackie Avery and my special girlfriend, Carol Burgess, with
whomI am still in touch. I remember two of the teachers were Miss English and Miss German,
which I always thought rather weird considering there was a war on.
I then moved on to the C of E junior school where I was , again, a prefect (so much power at such a young age).Played "fag cards" during playtime. Mr. Palmer was one of our teachers. Used to go old time dancing in Godalming with my, then, favourite girlfriend, Kay Jones and her friend Diane Pratt. We met at Godalming Saturday morning pictures. Other "girlfriends" included Eileen Gadd and Sylvia Wickens. Great days.
My dad worked in,and then owned, Normans Chemists in the high street.
John Shakesheff.
