Me Vs The Gads Hill Girl Guides
A Memory of Gadshill.
This goes back a long way, I think around 1950. I was a pupil at King's School in Rochester and used to live just off Brompton Farm Road. My parents used to allow me to sleep in the garden (an adventure ?), I digress, I used to go around on my bike, and one day cycling down Crutches Lane, I noticed some tents being erected in the fields of Gads Hill School. They were all girls trying to put the tents up (I was a man, I thought, and thought these girls were useless). I carried on watching, they got there eventually. I returned home and started plotting. I would return at night-time.
As I was sleeping in my tent in the garden it was no problem. I stayed awake, and it must have been around 11p.m. - I set off on my bike along the Gravesend Road, no lights, I'd never been on my bike at night before. I went to where the girls were camped and released the guy ropes, I think it was two of the tents, and then I scarpered. I do remember hearing the girls in one tent saying there was someone outside, another answered something like, if he comes in he's going to get it. They didn't sound a bit frightened I'm glad to say. I went up there on my bike a couple of days later, and they were still camped in the field. If you were one of those girls, my apologies - I used to go out with one of your fellow pupils 2 or 3 years later.
