More about this scene
One local resident of two centuries ago was Philip Salkeld, who won the Victoria Cross at Delhi in 1857. Salkeld was mortally wounded blowing up a gate into the city during a battle in one of Queen Victoria's 'little wars'. His was a life of contrasts, indeed, beginning amidst the green fields of Dorset and ending in the heat of India. Salkeld's father was vicar of Fontmell for many years.
