More about this scene
Exmouth is Devon's oldest seaside resort, and this was reflected in the construction of several early and very prominent hotels. The Royal Beacon Hotel was built c1810 at the end of the fashionable Beacon Terrace. It began its existence as the Marine Hotel, no doubt because of its fine views over the sea and estuary, but became the Beacon Hotel soon afterwards. It acquired the 'Royal' appendage to its name after a visit in 1844 by the King of Saxony.
