School
A Memory of Evesham.
I remember shoe inspections, and length of skirt and "divided skirts (shorts) had to be a certain number of inches above the knee but not many (perish the thought!) This was Prince Henry's Grammar School. The younger girls had to do gym in their navy blue knickers and we had to dash across to it hoping the boys would not see us! The showers were not really hot and other kids would stare at you, so sometimes I forgot my towel! It was 1956 to 1963 and I remember the Princess Royal Hall being opened. It rained and we had to dash off to our art class to be there when she came on her tour. The teachers all had their university gowns. The headmaster had a large umbrella to shelter the Princess from the downpour. I remember high standards were always set. There were things to attend like the Debating Society, Film Society. I remember listening to someone debating "It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive". You were told which day to wear summer dresses, white socks and sandals. I remember the Lost Property cupboard, and I once sneaked out before 3.45pm to see a Cliff Richard film. Innocent days indeed!
