Pier Road

A Memory of Erith.

In 1952 I lived from a baby, below the record shop in Pier Road. When standing looking down towards the river, it was on the right hand side. The access was via a track that ran parallel to Pier Road, behind the shops.
We had sleeper steps down to a back yard. Our toilet was outside and a small shed for bits and pieces. My Dad Jack built an aviary in the yard too. He worked at Slade Green.
We had a small front room and scullery. For our bedroom you had to climb one flight of stairs which took you to the shop level, then up another flight to a room above the shop.
My sister was born while we were there too. In the bedroom was a wardrobe, double bed, a small child’s bed and a cot.
I used to go to the cinema on a Saturday, and remember going with Mum to, I think it was a Co-op round the corner. We bought broken biscuits, a slab of salt/sugar, this was wrapped in grease proof paper. Then we went downstairs with our vinegar bottle and got it filled up from a keg.
I have lots of memories from there, then about 1957/8 we moved to Belvedere to William Smith House. I went to St Augustine’s School and in 1962 we moved to Hampshire for my Dads work. I only remember a David Schooman, not sure on spelling, George and Elizabeth who lived near Lesley Park, and Carol Nuttall who lived the other side of the railway line.
