More about this scene
Elsecar is situated 3 miles south of Barnsley. This is the industrial side of the vast Wentworth Estate: Elsecar was at the forefront of coal exploitation in the 18th century. Initially, the Marquis of Rockingham leased out land for a small mine, but the following year he realised the potential here. He began to exploit this natural resource on his land, in the process becoming one of the biggest producers of coal in South Yorkshire. The old mine was sunk in 1752, with the New Colliery in operation from September 1795. All around were subsidiary trades, such as iron and coal tar. Rockingham also built a short canal to link with the Dearne and Dove Canal. Holy Trinity church was built in 1843, and in 1902 a peal of bells was added as a grateful memorial to the 6th Earl of Fitzwilliam, nephew of Rockingham.
