St Lawrence School
A Memory of Effingham.
Does anyone else remember St Lawrence School in the 1950s? I attended from 1949 till 1955, Mr Watkins was headmaster. An elderly man who used to hang round the school children after school and give them half an apple each committed suicide in that period. He was called Mr Devonport I believe. He is buried at St Lawrence Church but I am not sure why as this must be consecrated ground! I remember the church bells chiming every 15 minutes (used to keep me awake at night) and the bells tolling after a funeral.
I have many memories of my 20 years in Effingham starting in 1945 and would be more than happy to share them. I believe I still have the original mock-up for playing fields hall as my father was chairman after Barnes Wallace. (Norman Ford).
I am currently a volunteer at the Surrey History Society and this has hot home to be how important it is to share memories. My telephone number is 07796935316 please ting any time.
Mary Lucas
ps I married an Effingham man originally, who came from an old Effingham family, so this might jog my memory also
