Francklyn Gardens Edgware

A Memory of Edgware.

My Mum & Dad,Nellie & Pat Murphy bought our house at 63 Francklyn Gardens pre war as a brand new house.
My sister Maureen was born during the war and spent a lot of time in an Air raid shelter in our front room !!
My brother Mick and I Barbara were born post war but I can still remember food rationing and Barrage balloons in Edgwareberry Park.
We all went to Broadfields Infant and Junior School and my sister and I went to Spur Road Secondary School. My brother went to Moat Mount Secondary School.
I left school at 17yrs and did a year apprenticeship at Edgware General Hospital before beginning my 3 years Nursing Training 1965- 1968 .
I worked as. Staff Nurse and Sister at Edgware hospital and then moved into London and worked as a Sister at St Mary's Paddington in 1972.
1974 I emigrated to New Zealand.
I have returned to Edgware many times over the years but now have no family living there.
I would love to communicate with anyone that was either living in Francklyn Gardens around about this time or old school friends.

I lived at 69 Francklyn Gardens from 1937, aged 4, to 1951 - John Weiss, no brothers or sisters. At 67 there was Mr Close, a widower and retired hairdresser, with his daughter (possibly named Joyce, but I'm not sure). Further down there was the Weisfeld family and next to them the Bogad family - I think the wives in each family were sisters, the Weisfeld children included David, the eldest, but I can't remember the younger ones, the Bogad children were Henry, the eldest, and two girls, Leila and Sylvie. At 41 (or 43) was a family with a boy named Ronnie, much the same age as me, and at 43 (or 45) a family with a son Harold, at least a year older. Opposite them was Mrs Armstrong from Ireland. More names might come to mind. I have a vague memory of someone in the printing business, a compositor, somewhere near no 63, possibly your father? I went to the temporary primary school at St Andrews Presbyterian Church as Broadfields School was still incomplete, and then for one year to Edgware School in the High Street until Broadfields was completed in 1942, where I was in the 2nd and 3rd forms until going on to another school in 1944.
Unfortunately I would have only been 4 in 1951 and I do not recall the all the names you mentioned but Weisfeld is familiar.
Yes, my father was a compositor !!
Our neighbours at 61 were Marianne & Gerald Bernett, Marianne still lives there.
At 65 were Reg & Phil Scarr.
At 71 or 73 was the Thornes with a son called Stewart who become a Taylor in Radlett.
I really only remember families that had children similar ages to us !
Sorry to have taken so long to come back to this website!
Did your father work mainly at nights? I think I recall not having much opportunity to talk to him, but his occupation interested me as I got interested in typesetting - I ran our school printing press from 1949 to 1951, and even though that was hand setting of cold type, for a treadle machine, I became very interested in the whole typesetting business and visited a few newspaper firms on guided tours, and realised what a skilled job that of a compositor was - I later did a great deal of typographic design though my formal training was as an architect.
The Thornes were at 73, a detached house, whereas ours at 69 was semi-d with 71, and for the moment I can't recall their name - a brother and sister living with their (old) parents. We all moved out of Francklyn Gardens to Harrowes Meade in 1951 when my grandmother came to live with us.
I remember knowing the Scarrs but can't fix any face to them.
Does any body remember Bernerd Lock and Daphne Fowler who lived in Wolmer Gardens about 1949

Terry Hughes
