Francklyn Gardens Edgware
A Memory of Edgware.
My Mum & Dad,Nellie & Pat Murphy bought our house at 63 Francklyn Gardens pre war as a brand new house.
My sister Maureen was born during the war and spent a lot of time in an Air raid shelter in our front room !!
My brother Mick and I Barbara were born post war but I can still remember food rationing and Barrage balloons in Edgwareberry Park.
We all went to Broadfields Infant and Junior School and my sister and I went to Spur Road Secondary School. My brother went to Moat Mount Secondary School.
I left school at 17yrs and did a year apprenticeship at Edgware General Hospital before beginning my 3 years Nursing Training 1965- 1968 .
I worked as. Staff Nurse and Sister at Edgware hospital and then moved into London and worked as a Sister at St Mary's Paddington in 1972.
1974 I emigrated to New Zealand.
I have returned to Edgware many times over the years but now have no family living there.
I would love to communicate with anyone that was either living in Francklyn Gardens around about this time or old school friends.

Yes, my father was a compositor !!
Our neighbours at 61 were Marianne & Gerald Bernett, Marianne still lives there.
At 65 were Reg & Phil Scarr.
At 71 or 73 was the Thornes with a son called Stewart who become a Taylor in Radlett.
I really only remember families that had children similar ages to us !
Did your father work mainly at nights? I think I recall not having much opportunity to talk to him, but his occupation interested me as I got interested in typesetting - I ran our school printing press from 1949 to 1951, and even though that was hand setting of cold type, for a treadle machine, I became very interested in the whole typesetting business and visited a few newspaper firms on guided tours, and realised what a skilled job that of a compositor was - I later did a great deal of typographic design though my formal training was as an architect.
The Thornes were at 73, a detached house, whereas ours at 69 was semi-d with 71, and for the moment I can't recall their name - a brother and sister living with their (old) parents. We all moved out of Francklyn Gardens to Harrowes Meade in 1951 when my grandmother came to live with us.
I remember knowing the Scarrs but can't fix any face to them.
